Capture Bonik Barta The Dhaka Art Project discussion was covered by Jhumu, a master student of Media studies and journalism in Dhaka. She is involved in the Dhaka Art Project as a writer. Her article is published in a local newspaper, Bonik Barta. Read the following interview in English or the original Bangladeshi version here. “Martjin Crowe is Brazilian by birth, but doesn’t like to associate himself with specific country or race. Along with a good number of philosopher and artist like to travel many places of the world to let the world know about the real scenario of subaltern people; rather than conventional saying about them. He liked to introduce himself as an artist, philosopher and writer as well. Martjin completed his P.hd in cultural anthropology. With the consequences of his work came Dhaka to do ‘Dhaka art project’ and gave a warm interview to ‘Bonik barta’- Why do you emphasize more on philosophy? I am not a scientist; because, science only look for answer and truth only; but philosophy teach us to ‘question people own self and their works too.’ I do more believe on question rather than answer. That’s why I am a philosopher. How do you relate philosophy and art together? I also like introduce myself as an artist too; because, art don’t answer anything straight way and truly. Artist let the art go on its own way and beholders explain it on their own way and finally they just find themselves with full of questions. As an example- take a photograph. With a maximum wide lance you can only capture a moment or a selective portion rather than the overall whole scenario and environment. That’s how art never tell the truth, but it can make a lot of questions and some more un-fulfillment to the spectators. Here philosophy interlinks with art; and I became a philosopher and artist. Say something about Dhaka art project… I and some of my friends are working with- homeless, street children, elderly people and drag queen. For the works we are visiting many countries including- Sao Paolo, Cambodia, Bolivia and now in Bangladesh to do extended the work. Basically this is a inter exchanging project. Main concept of this project is? Here we will discuss our own experience with the participants’. From this they will select their own concept to do this project. Here, most important thing is- this whole project is a group work. Everybody will be here like a family will work on their own project and concept; but for the whole work everybody must have to answer -‘what you contributed to the world?’ In this project no personal focus or improvement will get priority rather had to find the way of being good as a whole. Main concept of this project you can say in simple words like this- If a person became rich he supped to treat as a successful human world widely but if another one became poor they treated as unlucky, neglected and unsuccessful; where reality is different! Those people are much stronger and successful to me. For the sake of ongoing system they are being mistreated, which is wrong. So I do believe in a single sentence- ‘ they are people like you and me but live under the wrong circumstances.’ So, letting the world know the truth as opposed to the current scenario is the main concept of this project.” 18
